TIRANA, August 24 – Canadian newspaper The Toronto Star reports on Albania’s rapid transformation from a communist-era isolated state into a growing European tourism destination. Reporter Tim Johnson highlights its natural beauty, cultural heritage, diverse landscapes and expanding tourism infrastructure.
According to Albania’s Institute of Statistics, foreign visitors travelling for holidays or family reasons more than doubled from 5.2 million in 2021 to around 11 million in 2025. Visitors from the Western Balkans remain the largest group. Meanwhile, Albania attracts more tourists from Britain, Northern Europe and North America.
During a 10-day trip, Johnson travelled from the Albanian Alps to the Ionian coast, Berat and Gjirokaster. He describes Himara’s coastline, traditional homes, historic castles, Ottoman and Byzantine heritage, local wineries and family-run restaurants. He also highlights Albania’s relatively affordable costs compared with other regional destinations.
At the same time, the article recalls Albania’s decades of communist isolation under Enver Hoxha. Today, the country presents a sharply different picture. A direct seasonal Toronto-Tirana service began in June, while tourism investment continues to reshape cities and coastal areas.
Johnson concludes that Albania is undergoing rapid transformation while retaining much of its traditional character.
