During the gala evening organized by the Albanian-American Relations Council in New York, Prime Minister Edi Rama said that society is facing a digital “barbarism,” where cyberattacks and content on social media are directly affecting young people.
Despite his criticism of the negative impact of these platforms, Rama clarified that he is not calling for or proposing the shutdown of social media, although, according to him, protecting children remains a major concern.
“They attack us by messing with the minds of our young people every hour through mobile phones, through social media. I know, God bless the First Amendment, but if the First Amendment is intended to allow every kind of garbage and trash, excuse me, then we are no longer living in the civilization where the best education, the best behavior, and the best way of communication between people have been developed. We are living in barbarism. We can do the same thing to our enemies, because they have protected their people, they have put safeguards in place for them. We cannot go and mess with the minds of Chinese children because they are protected, and I am not becoming an advocate, nor am I saying that I advocate shutting down social media,” Rama said.
