Tirana-Durrës Railway Line Set for Electrification, Karakaçi: Service to Be Operational by End of 2027

Minister of Energy and Infrastructure Enea Karakaçi told Parliament on Thursday that the government has submitted a bill to ratify an agreement with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), which will finance the full electrification of the Tirana-Durrës railway line and the Rinas railway station.

The minister said the funding will enable the construction of modern railway infrastructure in line with European Union standards, bringing Albania its first fully electric railway service.

According to Karakaçi, civil works on the railway segment have already been completed, signaling systems are nearing completion, and with the ratification of the agreement, the electrification phase will officially begin. He added that the government’s goal is for the railway line to be fully operational by the end of 2027.

“The bill we are presenting today concerns the ratification of the agreement with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development for the electrification of the Tirana-Durrës railway line and the Rinas station.

This financing will make it possible to fully electrify the line, build the necessary power infrastructure, and develop the railway in accordance with EU standards, introducing Albania’s first fully electric train service.

Civil works have already been completed, signaling systems are close to completion, new stations are under construction, and once this agreement is finalized, the electrification phase will officially begin.

Our objective is for citizens to have access to a modern railway line by the end of 2027.

This project is not a standalone investment but part of a broader program. Alongside the Tirana-Durrës and Mother Teresa International Airport railway project, we are also advancing the construction of the railway extension to Tirana Central Station, as well as a modern train maintenance system,” the minister said.
