TIRANA, July 16 – Authorities have started opening forest access routes across Tirana County to improve wildfire response during the summer fire season.
The Tirana Prefecture and the Tirana Agency of Parks and Recreation are clearing existing former military tracks to allow fire engines to reach forested areas more quickly. The work aims to improve access for emergency crews and reduce wildfire risks.
Meanwhile, Tirana Prefect Shkëlqim Hajdari called for strict penalties against anyone who causes fires through negligence or intentionally. He said authorities expect to complete the reopening of all forest roads across the county by the end of July through joint work with the armed forces, forestry services and other institutions.
In addition, Agency of Parks and Recreation Director Julinda Dhame said authorities have adopted a wildfire prevention plan and formed joint teams with other institutions to respond rapidly to emergencies.
The county has approved a plan to reopen 100 km of forest roads, together with an equal length of connecting routes.
Fire Service Director Shkëlqim Goxhaj also urged residents in rural and forest areas not to burn agricultural waste during the summer. He warned that high temperatures and dry conditions can quickly turn small fires into major wildfires.
Earlier, authorities announced that work will expand next week to the Bërzhita–Petrela–Pëllumbas and Zall-Herr–Herras–Zall-Bastar areas. The reopened roads will also improve access for visitors to these hilly destinations.
