Tirana to host Albanian Doctors Federation in Europe congress on health system challenges

TIRANA, May 29 – Tirana will host on Saturday the 27th Congress of the Federation of Albanian Doctors in Europe (AMFE). The event will gather dozens of Albanian doctors from Europe, the United States and the region.

German public health authorities recognise the congress. It provides 11 professional credits. The federation aims to exchange expertise and strengthen cooperation on healthcare systems in Albania, Kosova and the region.

Meanwhile, AMFE Secretary General Gjergji Pashaj said in an interview with RTSH that antibiotic resistance will dominate the discussions. He described it as a “silent pandemic”.

The World Health Organization warns about antimicrobial resistance. It says the phenomenon could cause up to 50 million deaths globally by 2050 if misuse continues.

In addition, Pashaj linked antibiotic resistance to misuse by patients. He also linked it to antibiotic use in the food chain, especially in livestock products and meat consumed daily.

Pashaj stressed public awareness as a key challenge. He highlighted the need to prevent self-medication and antibiotic use without medical consultation.

The congress will bring together specialists from Albania, Kosova, North Macedonia, Germany, Switzerland, Denmark and Finland. Participants will present experiences and healthcare practices on antibiotics and antimicrobial therapies.
