TIRANA, July 6 – Turkey will host the 36th NATO Summit of Heads of State and Government in Ankara on 7 July. The meeting takes place amid global uncertainty. Ankara last hosted a NATO summit in Istanbul in 2004.
Meanwhile, the summit will gather 32 heads of state and government. US President Donald Trump will attend. Foreign ministers, defence ministers, and senior officials will also take part.
In addition, NATO partners from the Asia-Pacific Four group will join the talks. The group includes Australia, Japan, New Zealand, and South Korea. These countries do not belong to NATO. However, they cooperate with the alliance on security issues in both Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific regions.
Leaders will focus on defence burden sharing. Turkey will highlight its role in NATO through military contributions and defence industry capacity.
Earlier, officials confirmed the inclusion of the Defence Industry Forum in the official programme. A ministerial meeting will also take place under the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative. Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates will attend.
Turkish authorities will deploy over 56,000 security personnel. They will also monitor cyberspace for digital threats. Around 3,000 journalists have applied for accreditation.
The summit recalls the 2004 Istanbul meeting that expanded NATO’s role in Afghanistan and support for Iraq. The Ankara meeting will set priorities for the alliance in the coming years.
