U.S. Senate confirms Eric Wendt as ambassador to Albania

TIRANA, June 17 – The U.S. Senate confirmed retired Lieutenant General Eric Wendt as the next U.S. ambassador to Albania with 51 votes in favour and 47 against.

The full Senate vote followed approval by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, where Wendt secured majority support from committee members.
Authorities now expect the ambassador to assume his duties in the coming days, in line with procedures set by the U.S. administration.

Wendt brings more than 34 years of military and international security experience. During his career, he held senior positions in both the U.S. military and NATO structures.

In November 2019, he took command of NATO’s Special Operations Headquarters in Belgium. The role placed all alliance special operations forces under his command, including Albanian units. During that period, he worked closely with Albanian troops and military leaders.

Earlier, Wendt served for one year as a regional deputy commander in Afghanistan. That assignment included oversight of troops from Albania.

In addition, he spent two years with the U.S. Department of State as part of the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem. There, he served as the U.S. Security Coordinator.

The State Department highlighted Wendt’s leadership experience following his nomination. A statement published last month also cited his ability to manage complex multinational organisations and his regional expertise.
