U.S. State Department Responds to Euronews Albania on Berisha’s ‘Non Grata’ Status

The Press Office of the U.S. Department of State has responded to an inquiry from Euronews Albania regarding reports circulating on Thursday morning that the United States had revoked the “non grata” designation imposed on Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha.

In response to a question from journalist Thimi Samarxhiu, the State Department stated that “waivers have been granted for individuals affected by the measures.”

“The Department of State has issued waivers for certain 7031(c) designations imposed during the previous administration because granting such waivers serves a compelling national interest,” the response to Euronews Albania said.

Reports that Berisha’s “non grata” designation had been lifted began circulating on Thursday morning, as he was welcomed with applause by members of his parliamentary group.

Asked by journalists for further details, Berisha did not elaborate, limiting his comments to the words:

“I came, it is done.”
