TIRANA, July 13 – The United Kingdom has announced measures to ban support for Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), designating the group as a threat to national security, according to the BBC.
UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said the new powers will make support for the IRGC a criminal offence. The measure includes expressing approval of the group or providing assistance, with penalties of up to 14 years in prison.
Meanwhile, Albania had already taken a similar position earlier this year. The Albanian Parliament adopted a resolution that designated the IRGC as a terrorist organisation and identified Iran as a state sponsor of terrorism, following cyberattacks targeting Albanian institutions and other security concerns.
The UK government also announced restrictions against two other groups linked to security threats. Authorities said the new powers will help address foreign interference, espionage and attacks connected to these organisations.
According to the BBC, British officials linked the IRGC to alleged plots and threats targeting communities in the UK. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the measures aim to prevent foreign-backed intimidation and violence on British soil.
The UK Home Office officials described the IRGC as a central part of Iran’s security apparatus, with activities extending beyond conventional military operations.
