Vengu: US Loan Agreement Secures $302 Million for a Stronger Albanian Defence

Former Defence Minister and Socialist Party MP Pirro Vengu said the loan agreement with the United States marks the largest defence financing package in Albania’s history. The agreement will finance the purchase of US-made military systems, equipment and weapons.

Speaking in a television interview, Vengu said the agreement provides $302 million to strengthen Albania’s national security.

He stressed that national security must remain above political divisions and always requires broad consensus.

Moreover, Vengu explained that Albania will receive a US loan to purchase American defence equipment and military systems.

“The world will not wait for us to debate who supports NATO more. Instead, this programme allows Albania to secure US financing and invest in American-made defence systems,” he said.

He also noted that work on the programme began more than two years ago. Romania, Lithuania and Poland joined earlier, while Albania entered the second group of beneficiaries alongside Ukraine. In addition, the relevant committees of the US Congress approved the agreement a few weeks ago.

Furthermore, Vengu described the package as the largest defence financing agreement Albania has ever secured. He said the $302 million will fund advanced military systems, equipment and firepower.

However, he declined to reveal details about the specific systems included in the agreement, explaining that such information remains confidential. He added that the US Congress offered Albania highly favourable financing terms, even compared with those granted to other allies.

Meanwhile, Vengu called for political unity on defence issues.

“Defence and national security should stay above politics. Albania must recognise today’s geopolitical challenges and support this agreement. Parliament’s approval demonstrated responsibility for our national defence,” he said.

Finally, Vengu argued that strong democracies succeed by acting quickly and decisively in response to security challenges.
