Vlora “Museum of Water” project assessed for year-round tourism potential

TIRANA, April 14 – Tourism, Culture and Sports Minister Blendi Gonxhja held talks with an international team of architects and local experts on the proposed “Illiri Oceanarium – Museum of Water” project in Vlora. The initiative aims to develop a regional tourism, cultural, and research destination.

The meeting brought together architects Ettore Piras of Ettore Piras Architetto, Lev Libeskind of Libeskind Studio Design, Ervin Taçi of MA Studio & Partners, and David Y. Monassebian of Envision USA LLC. Participants reviewed the concept and its development potential.

Gonxhja said the project aims to create a modern infrastructure in Vlora, with water as its central theme. He said the concept combines education, scientific research, and visitor experience in a single space.

Discussions focused on whether the initiative could function as a year-round attraction. Officials said this could help extend Albania’s tourist season beyond the summer months.

The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sports said the project remains at a preliminary concept stage. It added that further assessments will follow in cooperation with the Vlora municipality and other institutions.

Authorities said the next steps will determine the feasibility of implementation and the long-term impact on the local tourism sector.
