General secretaries from the parliaments of the Western Balkans, Austria and Slovenia met in Tirana on Wednesday.
The forum focused on regional cooperation, parliamentary diplomacy and European Union integration. Deputy Speaker of Parliament Agron Gjekmarkaj and Secretary General Genci Gjonçaj opened the meeting.
They stressed the importance of parliamentary cooperation in supporting EU integration across the Western Balkans. Gjekmarkaj said parliaments play a key role in democracy, transparency and institutional reform.
Gjonçaj highlighted stronger cooperation between regional parliaments and EU member states. Participants shared best practices on legal reforms and aligning legislation with EU standards.
They also discussed public engagement and civic education in the EU integration process. Gjonçaj presented Albania’s initiatives to involve young people and citizens in democratic debate.
The meeting ended with talks on future cooperation and a visit to Parliament’s new Visitor Center, which will open soon.
