1.3 km embankment rehabilitated, protecting 2,000 hectares of farmland in Vrina, Saranda

TIRANA, August 18 – Around 2,000 hectares of farmland in Vrina, Saranda are gaining better protection from flooding, erosion and saltwater intrusion. The work covers the rehabilitation of the K-17 canal embankment and the irrigation and drainage system.

Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Andis Salla visited the investment site in Vrina. The first phase has reinforced around 1.3 km of the embankment. Salla said the earlier problem involved seawater entering the Vrina pumping station and threatening farmland with flooding.

According to the minister, the investment package totals around EUR 20 million. It aims to protect farmland and improve irrigation and drainage. It will also strengthen security for agricultural production.

Meanwhile, the second phase will continue the rehabilitation of the K-17 canal embankment. The wider package also includes modernising the irrigation and drainage system. Salla said the work will provide long-term protection for farmland and support the local economy.

In addition, the investment is expected to create better conditions for mussel farming. Salla linked the intervention to local economic activity, tourism and increased agricultural production. He said irrigation and drainage investments will continue as a priority in other parts of Albania to help prevent flooding.
