106 years since the founding of the National Library of Albania

Albania celebrates 106 years since the establishment of the National Library of Albania, founded on July 10, 1920.

The library began with the collection of the Albanian Literary Commission, which moved to the Ministry of Education in 1920. After its foundation, the institution worked to expand its collection and strengthen its role as the country’s national library.

When it officially opened in 1922, the National Library held around 6,000 volumes. During the pre-war period, the institution experienced important development, especially between 1928 and 1937 under the leadership of patriot and Albanian language scholar Sotir Kolea.

To mark this important anniversary, the National Library announced the return of its scientific journal “BIBLIOTHECÆ” after a 16-year break. The official publication will once again provide a platform for researchers, librarians, archivists, museum specialists and information professionals.

The journal will feature studies on library science, information management, bibliography, cultural heritage, archives, museums, digitalization, digital humanities, book history and reading culture.

Through its collections, research activities and preservation of national heritage, the National Library of Albania continues to play a central role in promoting knowledge, culture and education.
