131st Protest Moves Towards Parliament as Demonstrators Oppose Territorial Reform

The 131st day of protests took a different turn this Thursday, as demonstrators moved from Skanderbeg Square towards Parliament, unlike previous gatherings held near the Prime Minister’s Office.

The relocation of the protest comes on a day when Parliament is expected to vote on the territorial reform proposed by the Socialist Party, one of the most widely debated initiatives, strongly opposed by the opposition and protesters.

Citizens also gathered near Parliament earlier in the morning, where clashes broke out with police forces. During the tensions, eight protesters were arrested by police officers.

Later, protesters announced another gathering in the afternoon, shifting the focus of the demonstration to the Parliament building.

The protest is taking place as debates continue inside Parliament over the new territorial map, which envisages changes to the organisation of local government units and has faced opposition from both opposition parties and some MPs.
