The Kosova Assembly elected Justina Shiroka Pula as president on October 6, ending a political crisis in a 13-minute vote. The vote took place in the final hour of the constitutional deadline. The Democratic Party of Kosova (PDK) accepted Prime Minister Albin Kurti’s proposal to nominate Shiroka Pula. She secured 81 votes in the first round, the required minimum. She then took the presidential oath before lawmakers. Her rival, Eliza Hoxha, received one vote. Two ballots were invalid.
PDK leader Bedri Hamza said her candidacy was acceptable. The legislation committee had confirmed that both candidates met the constitutional and legal requirements. Shiroka Pula is an economist and academic. She became the first woman to lead the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Kosova. She later served as energy and mining minister from 2008 to 2011 and as a PDK lawmaker from 2011 to 2014.
Meanwhile, the Assembly ended its extraordinary session after completing its work. The Self-Determination movement pledged to support a PDK bill amending the law on the Specialist Chambers.
