Zog I: The Rise of Albania’s First Modern King

Ahmet Zogu rose from a powerful leader in Mat to become one of the most influential figures in Albania’s modern history. He served as prime minister, president and, ultimately, king, leading the country through a turbulent period of state-building and political transformation.

Born on October 8, 1895, at Burgajet Castle in Mat, Zogu came from the influential Zogolli family. He studied in Istanbul before returning to Albania in 1912, where he quickly entered the country’s political and military affairs.

His political rise accelerated after the Congress of Lushnjë. Zogu took charge of the Interior Ministry and helped strengthen state administration and public order. He became prime minister in 1922, president in 1925 and, three years later, King of the Albanians.

As king, Zogu pushed Albania toward greater modernization. His government introduced new legal codes, expanded education and promoted study opportunities abroad. At the same time, critics accused him of concentrating power and using force against political opponents.

Zogu also strengthened Albania’s financial and political ties with Italy. However, the economic crisis of the 1930s slowed his modernization efforts.

Italy’s invasion of Albania in April 1939 ended Zogu’s reign. He fled the country and spent the rest of his life in exile, living in several countries before settling in France. He died in Suresnes, near Paris, on April 9, 1961.

His legacy remains closely linked to Albania’s difficult transition toward a centralized modern state.
