“Wonders of Arbëria” returns to the stage of Albania’s National Theatre of Opera, Ballet and Folk Ensemble. The performance features the National Ensemble of Folk Songs and Dances in cooperation with the ‘Gurra e Kurbinit’ ensemble. Arbëria is the historical name used for Albania during the Middle Ages.
The show presents Albanian cultural heritage through epic lahuta music, polyphonic singing, the K’cimi i Tropojës (Tropoja Dance), the traditional xhubleta dress, historic stone cities and the ancient tradition of transhumance. The lahuta (a traditional one-stringed bowed instrument) takes centre stage as one of the oldest symbols of Albania’s epic tradition. Its sound has accompanied songs of legendary heroes and passed history and cultural memory between generations.
Meanwhile, renowned traditional flutist Vendim Kapaj will perform alongside lahuta player Pjetër Matusha and a group of çiftelia musicians. Kapaj gained international attention after performing in Christopher Nolan’s film “The Odyssey”, with music by Ludwig Goransson. His performance brings the sound of Albania’s mountains and pastoral traditions to the stage.
