Peleshi: Merger of Korça and Maliq Creates Albania’s Largest Municipality by Area

Speaker of Parliament Niko Peleshi has spoken from Korça about the administrative reform and the changes envisaged for the municipality under the new territorial map.

According to Peleshi, the merger of the municipalities of Korça and Maliq will create a new administrative unit covering 1,462 square kilometres, making it the largest municipality in Albania by area.

Peleshi said the new municipality will have around 100,000 residents and that the merger will allow for the administration of a vast agricultural area, including the Maliq Plain, the second-largest plain in the country.

“Under the new map, Korça becomes the largest municipality in Albania by area, covering 1,462 square kilometres. As you know, the two municipalities of Korça and Maliq will merge into a single large municipality, with an area not only larger than the others but also exceeding that of the next-largest municipality, Elbasan, by 200 square kilometres.

The large area is not due to a high population. The new municipality will have around 100,000 residents, but its size is due to the vast plains of Korça and Maliq, which now form one continuous area.

You can call it the Maliq Plain, to make those who are still sceptical about the reform feel a little better. I am convinced that this is a very positive development.

In terms of agriculture, the two municipalities will become one and will geographically administer almost the entire Maliq Plain, which is the second-largest plain in Albania,” Peleshi said.
