Euronews is broadcasting Saturday’s protest in Tirana live, reporting that opposition supporters and students have mobilized in the Albanian capital. According to authorities, 2,500 police officers have been deployed across the streets of Tirana.
Protesters took to the streets of the capital on Saturday, as police used water cannons and tear gas against large groups of demonstrators, some of whom threw objects at officers.
Supporters of the Democratic Party initially gathered outside the Prime Minister’s Office, where they remained for approximately an hour and a half. They set fire to cushions that Prime Minister Edi Rama had placed there as a symbolic invitation for dialogue with students.
The demonstrators then marched towards the Ministry of Education, where a separate student protest was taking place.
High school and university students are demanding lower tuition fees, increased government investment in education, and an end to corruption in the education system. Some have also joined the broader anti-government movement calling for the prime minister’s resignation.
A water cannon vehicle and units of the Rapid Intervention Forces (FNSH) were deployed near the Ministry of Education following calls on social media urging students to join the protest.
