Prime Minister Edi Rama has accused those behind violent protests of seeking to destabilize Albania and divert the country’s path toward the future.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Interior Minister Ervin Demo, Rama alleged that organized crime and foreign actors stood behind the violent element of the protests. He said a group of radicalized individuals had joined a diverse crowd with the aim of destabilizing the country.
Rama stressed that the government remained attentive to citizens’ genuine grievances and their reasons for supporting the protests, regardless of their political affiliation. However, he drew a clear distinction between legitimate demands and violence, criticizing media outlets for what he described as attempts to downplay violent acts. He also referred to ideologically radicalized individuals, including Antifa supporters and religious extremists, as well as people allegedly paid to fuel religious divisions.
Meanwhile, Interior Minister Ervin Demo said police were using technology to identify individuals suspected of violence during recent protests, including those who had concealed their faces with masks. He explained that investigators were processing hundreds of hours of footage from different sources, with technology helping speed up the identification process.
Demo stressed that covering one’s face did not prevent identification and pledged that police would continue working to bring those responsible for damaging public and private property to justice.
