His Beatitude Joan, Archbishop of Tirana, Durrës and All Albania, is attending the International Meeting for Peace, themed “Unarmed and Disarming Peace,” in the Italian city of Assisi, organized by the Community of Sant’Egidio.
The meeting marks the 40th anniversary of the historic initiative launched by Pope John Paul II in 1986 and is taking place from October 25 to 27, 2026.
The international gathering brings together primates and religious leaders from around the world, prominent political and cultural figures, peace activists, and representatives of civil society from 53 countries.
The meeting officially opened on October 25, 2026, with a message from the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella.
Archbishop Joan is scheduled to speak at two forums during the meeting, addressing the topics “Christian Unity as a Journey Towards Truth and Peace: An Orthodox Perspective” and “Contemporary Martyrs: Witnesses to Goodness.”
The closing ceremony will take place on October 27 in the Lower Square of the Basilica of Saint Francis, where a global appeal for peace will be issued.
