Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj has reacted to the results of Serbia’s parliamentary elections, congratulating the Student List on its victory over Aleksandar Vučić.
In a statement, Veliaj described the Serbian president as “Machiavellian and populist,” while also delivering a message about student movements, which he said do not represent the end of the political order but rather the end of an era.
“Congratulations to the students for bringing down Belgrade’s Machiavellian populist!” Veliaj wrote.
The Tirana mayor stressed that student protests should be seen as a signal of the changes demanded by the younger generation, calling on citizens and policymakers to understand their expectations.
“Student movements and protests are not ‘the end of the world,’ but the end of ‘a world.’ The sooner we understand this as citizens and policymakers, the better we will be able to respond to the needs and expectations of this generation,” Veliaj said.
In his statement, he also addressed the representation of Albanians in the Serbian parliament. According to the initial projections cited by Veliaj, Albanian parties are expected to increase their number of seats from one to two.
“Heartfelt congratulations also to our fellow Albanians in Serbia, who, according to current projections, are increasing their representation from one to two seats. A stronger voice for the rights of Albanians in Serbia!” the Tirana mayor concluded.
