Pink October: Women in Vlora Urge Regular Breast Screenings

Women in Vlora have joined the Pink October campaign, urging women and girls to prioritize breast health and get regular screenings.

Prime Minister Edi Rama shared messages from 14 women working in the arts, sports, journalism, local government and other fields. They called for greater awareness and stressed that early detection can save lives.

“A reminder of the importance of breast screenings this Pink October, through the voices of several women from Vlora,” Rama wrote on social media.

Actress Loris Sinanaj of the Petro Marko Theatre used her voice to deliver a powerful message. “I am not here to perform one of the most famous ballads, nor the stories of Rozafa or Doruntina. I am here to play the most important role of all — the role of life,” she said.

Meanwhile, Kejsi Isufi, a basketball player with Flamurtari, reminded women that “life is very beautiful and should be lived healthily.”

The campaign puts early detection at the centre of its message. Early diagnosis improves the chances of successful treatment and saves lives, participants stressed.

“Do not hesitate! Early diagnosis significantly increases the chances of recovery. It saves lives,” said Nevila Zaimi, a specialist at the Regional Directorate of Cultural Heritage in Vlora.

Silva Islamaj, deputy mayor of Selenicë, also shared her personal experience to encourage other women to act. “I had my health check. Go and get yours too. Do not waste time,” she urged.

The women also used the pink ribbon to honour those who have overcome breast cancer, those still fighting the disease and those who have lost their lives.

“One pink ribbon, thousands of stories, one message: Live!” said Anisa Hyseni, director of the Vlora Regional Council.

Similarly, Ornela Emini, director at Konispol Municipality, described the ribbon as a symbol of hope, strength and solidarity. She said it honours every woman’s struggle, whether she has overcome the disease, continues to fight or has lost her life.

Beyond these personal appeals, the campaign has also brought a striking visual message to the region. Porto Palermo Castle has turned pink in a symbolic show of support.

Through these initiatives, organisers aim to raise awareness of breast health and encourage women and girls to seek regular medical check-ups. Above all, the campaign stresses one message: early detection matters.
