Gjirokastër pupils learn traditional crafts through after-school programme

Traditional crafts are finding new audiences among young people in Gjirokastër through the “After-School” programme. The initiative gives pupils hands-on experience with skills passed down through generations.

Artisan Lizeta Kotroci Hatika teaches classes at two schools in the region. She said for RTSH that around 20 pupils attend each class and interest continues to grow. Throughout the school year, they will learn different techniques step by step.

Lessons will cover crochet, embroidery, wool work and other traditional crafts. Hatika said pupils who want to develop their skills further will also have the opportunity to practise at local craft studios during the summer.

Beyond practical skills, the programme introduces children to Albania’s cultural heritage. It also helps preserve traditional craftsmanship by encouraging younger generations to carry these skills forward.
