Albania’s National Institute of Cultural Heritage has inspected Kanina Castle to assess the condition of its historic structures and review conservation work completed so far.
During the inspection, specialists examined the fortress and focused on protecting its architectural features and historical authenticity.
Tourism, Culture and Sports Minister Blendi Gonxhja stressed the importance of regular on-site monitoring to track the condition of monuments and protect Albania’s cultural heritage.
Located in the village of Kanina, about six kilometres southeast of Vlora, the castle dates back to the 4th century BC. The Illyrians built the original fortification, while the Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans later rebuilt and adapted it.
Today, the fortress offers panoramic views of Vlora Bay and the Adriatic Sea.
Conservation, structural and geological works are continuing at the site. The project aims to strengthen and preserve the historic structures, improve infrastructure and enhance services for visitors.
