President Bajram Begaj has decreed May 9, 2027, as the date for the next local government elections in Albania.
In an official statement, the Presidency announced that the decision was made following consultations with representatives of political parties represented in Parliament and the State Election Commissioner.
The consultations were attended by the Socialist Party’s parliamentary group, the Social Democratic Party, and the State Election Commissioner, while other political parties did not respond to the President’s invitation.
According to the Presidency, the State Election Commissioner proposed May 9, arguing that setting this date would give institutions more time to prepare and implement the necessary measures. The Social Democratic Party also expressed its preference for this date.
Under Albania’s Electoral Code, local elections must take place during the spring electoral period, which includes four Sundays between April 15 and May 15.
The statement emphasized that the selected date does not favor any political party and does not undermine voters’ free will.
