President Bajram Begaj will hold consultations with representatives of political parties this Friday to determine the date of the 2027 local elections, in a process that begins with most opposition parties rejecting his invitation.
The first meeting is scheduled for 9:00 AM with representatives of the Socialist Party, while representatives of the Social Democratic Party, led by Tom Doshi, are expected to arrive at the Presidency at 11:00 AM.
Meanwhile, the Democratic Party, the Freedom Party, the Opportunity Party, the Albania Becomes Movement, and the Together Movement have announced that they will not accept the President’s invitation. It is important to note that this boycott is not the result of a joint decision, but rather reflects separate positions taken by each party.
Gazment Bardhi, head of the Democratic Party’s parliamentary group, described the process as “political theater,” arguing that the President should instead address concerns over ensuring free and fair elections.
Begaj has invited parliamentary parties for consultations before issuing the decree setting the date of the local elections, which are due to take place in spring 2027.
Under the Electoral Code, the elections must be held on a Sunday between April 15 and May 15, 2027. The deadline for announcing the election date is November 6.
So far, none of the parties has publicly proposed a specific date. May is considered the most likely month for the elections, while May 2 has been ruled out because it coincides with Orthodox Easter.
One of the dates still under discussion is May 9, which also marks Europe Day.
