President Begaj sets May 9, 2027, as date for Albania’s local elections

Albanian President Bajram Begaj has decreed May 9, 2027, as the date for the country’s next local elections.

The Electoral Code requires voting to take place on one of four Sundays between April 15 and May 15. During consultations, the Socialist Party, the Social Democratic Party and the State Election Commissioner responded to Begaj’s invitation. Other political parties declined to participate and did not publicly propose an alternative date.

The State Election Commissioner recommended May 9, the final Sunday in the permitted period, to allow more time for preparations. The Social Democratic Party also supported that date.

Begaj said the decision did not favour any political side or risk influencing voters’ free choice. He called on political parties to participate with candidates and platforms suited to the democratic process.

The president also urged parties to ensure fair competition, respect electoral law and equal treatment, and cooperate fully with the Central Election Commission to deliver elections that meet high democratic standards.
