Berisha: EC calls on Albania to make 115 changes next year

TIRANA, November 5 /ATSH/ – Chairman of the Democratic Party Sali Berisha reacted today to the European Commission’s annual progress report on Albania.

In a statement to the media, Berisha appreciated the report as unprecedented in the history of relations between Albania and the European Union.

He remarked that, in comparison to Montenegro, Albania exhibits the characteristics of an authoritarian dictatorship.

According to Berisha, the report highlights a range of issues regarding the functioning of institutions and calls for 115 changes in Albania over next year.

“It is vital for the Albanian public to be aware that the European Commission has outlined 115 required reforms for the upcoming year. A number of these are urgent priorities, specifically electoral reform, the reinstatement of parliamentary oversight regarding the government and budget, the elimination of exemptions in public procurement, and halting the degradation of protected areas,” said Berisha.

Further on, Berisha stated that the report calls into question the functioning of democracy, parliament, and the electoral process in Albania. It highlights key issues such as deep political polarization, limited parliamentary oversight of the executive, and an urgent need for electoral reform. Furthermore, the report notes that rulings by the Constitutional Court are not being implemented. /p.s./
