The European Union Ambassador to Albania, Sofia Moreira de Sousa, called on institutions to create space for dialogue to address public grievances expressed through protests in Tirana, during a joint press conference with Prime Minister Edi Rama.
Moreira de Sousa stressed that violence has no place in a democracy and that any response to acts of violence must remain proportionate and in accordance with the law.
“Environmental concerns were what sparked the peaceful protests in May, which later developed into a broader movement demanding transparency and accountability, the fight against corruption, and good governance.
Peaceful protests are part of democratic life, but violence has no place in a democracy, and any response to acts of violence must remain proportionate and in accordance with the law.
Violence has no place in democratic life. Grievances must be addressed through genuine dialogue, while democratic institutions have a responsibility to create the necessary space for that dialogue,” the EU Ambassador said.
