TIRANA, May 12 – Gjirokastër Castle continues to attract visitors from around the world as interest in cultural tourism grows in southern Albania. The historic site recorded strong visitor numbers during the first months of the year.
Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports Blendi Gonxhja shared images from the castle and highlighted steady tourist flows. He said the site welcomes visitors daily and described it as a symbol of history, architecture, and unique landscapes. He added that the current period marks only the beginning of the summer season.
Meanwhile, Director of the Gjirokastër Cultural Heritage Directorate Darsi Dhuka said around 48,000 tourists visited the castle from January to date. He said about 70% of them came from abroad. He added that visitor numbers during the first 12 days of May indicate a strong start to the tourist season.
At the same time, Dhuka said foreign visitors show particular interest in the monumental architecture and the Arms Museum inside the castle. He also pointed to the stone streets and panoramic views over the Drino Valley. He noted that the site forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage list.
In addition, he said April recorded 72% foreign visitors and 28% domestic visitors. He said tourists came from more than 40 countries. He linked the figures to rising international interest in Gjirokastër’s cultural heritage.
Overall, Gonxhja said the growing numbers reflect stronger international engagement and increased domestic interest. He added that Gjirokastër continues to strengthen its position as one of Albania’s key cultural tourism destinations. He also noted that the castle recorded 307,000 visitors last year.
