Lamallari: Coastal Security and Territorial Control Key Priorities for Tourist Season

Interior Minister Besfort Lamallari said security and territorial control along Albania’s coastline remain key priorities for the tourist season.

Lamallari spoke during a meeting in Sarandë with State Police officials, territorial inspectors and local institutions. He referred to recent events in the coastal city, where authorities detained four police officers over allegations linked to illegal construction.

According to Lamallari, the case showed the consequences of irresponsibility by officials who fail to enforce the law. Therefore, he called for stronger cooperation between all responsible institutions.

He described Sarandë and the Albanian coastline as national assets. At the same time, he warned that illegal activities cannot be treated as isolated local problems.

Meanwhile, Lamallari praised the quick response from the State Police and supervisory bodies. He said institutions must act immediately and prevent violations before they grow out of control.

“We cannot wait for seven-floor buildings or structures in the middle of the sea before reacting,” he said.

In addition, Lamallari stressed that responsibility does not belong only to police officers. Instead, it includes every public official responsible for enforcing the law and protecting public trust.

He also called for a deeper investigation into all institutions linked to territorial control. These include the Territorial Protection Inspectorate, the police and local municipalities.

Furthermore, Lamallari said every official has two choices: enforce the law with integrity or face justice.

Turning to the tourist season, he highlighted public safety as another major priority. As tourist flows continue to rise, he said authorities must prevent crime, illegal weapons and other unlawful activities along the coast.
