Ahmetaj Calls for Stronger Transparency and Consumer Protection in Microfinance

Second Deputy Governor of the Bank of Albania, Natasha Ahmetaj, called for stronger transparency and consumer protection in the microfinance sector.

She spoke during the 28th Annual Conference of the Microfinance Centre. The event focused on the future of microfinance and its social mission.

Ahmetaj said microfinance must remain an affordable financial alternative for vulnerable groups. She stressed the need to balance commercial goals with social responsibility.

She praised the sector’s role in expanding financial inclusion. She also highlighted support for small businesses and underserved areas.

Ahmetaj said microfinance should create opportunities for development, employment and economic inclusion. She noted that the Bank of Albania has introduced new regulatory and supervisory measures in recent years.

The measures aim to increase transparency, improve consumer protection and strengthen lending standards in the non-banking sector. Ahmetaj also highlighted reforms on risk management and customer transparency.

She said public trust and reputation remain essential for the sustainability of the microfinance industry. She praised the Albanian Microfinance Association for supporting reforms and promoting professional dialogue in the sector.
