“Gateway of the Alps” Project Brings €100 Million Investment to Northern Albania

The “Gateway of the Alps” project will bring €100 million in investments to northern Albania, focusing on tourism and infrastructure development in Shkodër.

Infrastructure and Energy Minister Enea Karakaçi presented the project today in parliament.

He said the initiative includes new connecting roads, improved public transport and stronger links between the coast and the Albanian Alps.

Karakaçi stressed that the project aims to support year-round tourism and economic growth in northern regions, including Lezhë, Kukës and Dibër.

According to the minister, the financing will not increase public debt. He described the project as a concrete measure for the development of northern Albania.

Karakaçi said the European Investment Bank finances the €100 million project. He added that Germany’s KfW committed another €50 million for the next phase, which is currently under approval.

The minister said the investment will improve infrastructure and boost tourism potential for residents and visitors.

He also clarified that the “Gateway of the Alps” project is separate from the government’s “Mountain Package” initiative and does not involve private investment projects.

Karakaçi rejected opposition concerns about transparency and external debt, calling the initiative a practical development project rather than a political one.
