“Dua” wins in Cannes, Basholli calls it a major prize for Kosovo cinema

Dua by Kosovar director Blerta Basholli has brought Kosovo a major international film award. After its emotional premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, the film won the prestigious SACD Award.

The prize is awarded by France’s Society of Dramatic Authors and Composers during the “Semaine de la Critique” section. The award marks another major success for Kosovo’s film industry.

Basholli said the prize carries special meaning because the film comes from a deeply personal story. The achievement stands out even more because only seven films entered the section from more than 1,050 applications worldwide.

The Cannes premiere became a memorable moment for the cast and crew. The audience welcomed the film with long applause.

“Dua” tells the story of young people in wartime Kosovo. It follows their dreams, fears and struggles during conflict. The story takes place in Prishtina during the Kosovo war.

Basholli said one of the biggest challenges was recreating wartime Prishtina in authentic locations. She said the film sends a clear message: people living through war still carry dreams and hopes, especially teenagers.

After Cannes, the film has already received invitations to more international festivals in France, Germany and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

It is also expected to screen at PriFest.

The film focuses on a teenage girl and her fight to protect dignity, identity and hope in the middle of war.

Through its main character, the story explores growing up, resilience and the search for a normal life despite extraordinary circumstances.
