Gjirokastër Castle continues to attract visitors, Gonxhja says

Gjirokastër Castle remains one of Albania’s most visited cultural heritage sites, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports Blendi Gonxhja said today.

He noted that the monument is enjoying another successful tourist season, with growing interest in cultural tourism in southern Albania.

Gonxhja shared images from the site showing the castle full of local and foreign visitors. He said tourists continue to choose the destination to explore the history, architecture, and heritage of the “stone city”.

He described the continued interest as proof of the strong historical and cultural value of the monument.

Gjirokastër Castle is located on a hill near Mali i Gjerë, at about 370 meters above sea level.

The castle is smaller in size compared to other medieval fortresses in Albania but is among the best preserved.

It measures approximately 500 meters in length and 75 meters in width and features five defensive towers.

At its entrance, visitors can find a cannon gallery and a weapons collection, with artifacts spanning from early periods up to the First and Second World Wars.

Authorities say the site continues to play an important role in promoting Albania’s cultural tourism offer.
