German Ambassador Karl Bergner and Dutch Ambassador Reinout Vos strongly backed Albania’s path toward EU membership in a joint statement on Tuesday.
The statement followed the 8th Albania-EU Intergovernmental Conference in Brussels. The ambassadors called progress on the “Fundamentals” chapter an important step in Albania’s accession process.
They congratulated Albanian citizens and everyone in politics, public administration and justice who contributed to the progress. They said Albania is part of the European family and reaffirmed strong support from Germany and Netherlands for its membership in the European Union.
The ambassadors said rule of law, fundamental rights and pluralist democracy remain at the core of European values. They added that progress in these areas will shape Albania’s pace toward membership.
The statement described the IBAR agreement as a clear sign of support for continued reforms and stronger institutions. The ambassadors also stressed that judicial independence and the fight against corruption, including high-level cases, are non-negotiable conditions.
They said decisions on lifting immunity should follow recommendations from the Venice Commission.
Germany and the Netherlands said they will closely follow Albania’s next reform steps and continue supporting the country’s EU path.
