Cyprus Deputy Minister for European Affairs Marilena Raouna said EU enlargement remains a top priority after the 8th Albania-EU Intergovernmental Conference in Tirana.
Raouna spoke alongside Prime Minister Edi Rama and EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos. She commented on a letter from German Chancellor Friedrich Merz about new ideas for candidate countries.
Raouna said the letter shows growing interest among EU member states in enlargement and its results. She said member states have not officially discussed the proposals yet.
Raouna stressed that the European Union will continue using the current enlargement methodology. She said the process remains merit-based and follows the EU’s legal framework.
Raouna also said all candidate countries must receive equal treatment. She added that enlargement has made clear progress in recent years.
According to Raouna, the EU continues to build consensus and find solutions despite the complexity of negotiations. She said the bloc will keep moving the enlargement agenda forward with all candidate countries.
