Acting Tirana Mayor Ristani inspects “Streets for Children” project, expansion planned to 40 schools

TIRANA, May 28 – Acting Mayor of Tirana Anuela Ristani inspected the road block near “Gustav Mayer” school and Kindergarten 26. The site forms part of the “Streets for Children” project that transforms public spaces for children, parents and the community.

Ristani said the project will expand to 40 additional schools in the capital. She said the Municipality of Tirana implements it in cooperation with a local civic organisation. At the same time, she said 20 schools and kindergartens are in the implementation phase. She added that 20 others remain in the design stage. She described the project as a long-term investment in child safety and neighbourhood quality of life.

The project focuses on safer school surroundings. It reduces vehicle traffic. Meanwhile, it transforms streets into spaces for walking, cycling and community activities.

Ristani said the first phase includes more than 9,000 square metres of pedestrian space. She added around 200 linear metres of new seating. She also said the project directly protects more than 12,000 students. In addition, she said benefits extend beyond children. She included parents, residents and local businesses in the impact. She said the project turns these areas into community meeting points.

At the same time, she stressed child safety as a priority in a fast-growing city. She said traffic has increased significantly. She underlined the need for people-centred urban planning. “Every school should have a safe entrance,” she said. “Every child should go to school without any fear. Every community deserves better public spaces.
