National Film Archive resumes archival filming after 27 years

TIRANA, May 28 – The Central State Film Archive announced the resumption of archival filming after a 27-year interruption.

Archive Director Eljan Tanini described the move as an important step. He said the initiative gives the institution a new opportunity to document Albanian life and preserve the country’s collective memory.

Meanwhile, the last archival filming at the institution took place in 1999. The archive resumed filming with footage from the Eid al-Adha prayer ceremony in central Tirana. Officials described the event as an important moment in the country’s spiritual and social life.

Archival filming includes preserved film material from past periods. Filmmakers, journalists and producers use such footage in documentaries, news reports, films and television programmes. The material documents authentic events, people and historical periods. In addition, it preserves evidence of life during a specific time.

Such archives hold historical, cultural and artistic importance for society. They document events, lifestyles, traditions and the development of cinema through the years. At the same time, archival footage serves as an important source for researchers, directors and journalists. It also helps future generations understand and revisit the country’s history.

The Central State Film Archive said it will carry out similar filming every week.
