The U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee is expected to hold a key session on June 4 regarding the nomination of retired General Eric Wendt, who has been nominated by the President of the United States to serve as the next U.S. Ambassador to Albania.
During the committee’s Business Meeting, senators will vote on whether Wendt’s nomination should advance to the full Senate for confirmation, the final procedural step before his official appointment.
The June 4 session follows the public confirmation hearing held on May 20 in Washington, where Wendt presented his vision and priorities for U.S.-Albania relations.
During his testimony, he faced questions on corruption, the role of SPAK (Albania’s Special Anti-Corruption Structure), American investment, and strategic cooperation in security and defense.
Unlike the public hearing in May, the upcoming meeting will take place in an Executive Session format, during which the committee discusses and votes on nominations before sending them to the Senate floor.
Eric Wendt is regarded as a highly respected figure in the fields of security and defense. He previously held the rank of three-star general and led both U.S. Special Operations Forces and NATO Special Operations activities in Europe. Throughout his career, he has also worked closely with Albanian security institutions, both within the framework of NATO and during international operations in Afghanistan.
In his Senate appearance, Wendt emphasized that the main priorities of his tenure in Tirana would include combating corruption and organized crime, strengthening the military partnership between the United States and Albania, supporting cybersecurity efforts, and creating a more favorable environment for American investment in the country.
He also expressed appreciation for the work of SPAK and highlighted the importance of the rule of law and fair competition for foreign investors.
If his nomination is approved by the committee on June 4, Eric Wendt’s name will proceed to the full Senate for a final confirmation vote, a process generally regarded as the last step before the arrival of the new U.S. ambassador in Tirana.
