TIRANA, June 2 – President of the Republic Bajram Begaj met President of the European Council Antonio Costa on Tuesday to discuss Albania’s progress in the European Union accession process.
During the meeting, the two officials welcomed Albania’s progress in the negotiations process, including the holding of the 8th EU-Albania Intergovernmental Conference. They noted that the conference confirmed the fulfilment of the interim benchmarks for Cluster 1, “Fundamentals”.
Begaj reaffirmed Albania’s commitment to complete the agenda and achieve the objectives required to close negotiating clusters by 2027. Meanwhile, he said reforms in justice, the rule of law, the fight against corruption and organised crime, and full alignment with the European Union’s Common Foreign and Security Policy demonstrate Albania’s readiness to join the European family.
In addition, the President described European Union enlargement in the Western Balkans as a strategic investment in peace, security and stability across Europe. He also thanked Costa for prioritising the enlargement process with Western Balkan countries during his mandate.
Begaj expressed appreciation for the support that the European Council and the European Commission continue to provide to Albania. At the same time, he said the country will maintain a fast pace of reforms and pursue concrete results on its path toward European Union membership.
According to Begaj, Albania implements reforms not only to meet European Union requirements but also to improve the lives of its citizens.
