TIRANA, June 4 – The United States supports stronger measures against trafficking in cultural heritage objects. US Deputy Ambassador to Albania Kethrin Hammond made the statement today during a meeting on prevention efforts.
She said the United States backs Albania’s efforts to strengthen national security. The fight targets trafficking in cultural objects and drugs. Meanwhile, she highlighted the role of criminal groups in cross-border illicit activity.
“Fighting trafficking in cultural property is not only about protecting heritage. It also produces real results for border security and national sovereignty,” Hammond said. “Criminals who traffic cultural heritage also traffic other illegal goods, such as dangerous drugs. These criminal organizations undermine public order. When you strengthen your capacity to protect cultural heritage, you also strengthen your borders, institutions and national security.”
In addition, Deputy Minister of Tourism and Culture Marinela Prifti underlined the need for stronger institutional cooperation. She also pointed to challenges in preventing trafficking in cultural heritage.
She said trafficking networks include cultural objects, archaeological items, icons and artefacts. She said these networks often link to organized crime. She added that they also engage in money laundering and international trafficking.
Meanwhile, the meeting brought together institutional representatives and experts. They discussed protection of cultural heritage. They also discussed cooperation against illicit trafficking in cultural objects.
