The U.S. Chargé d’Affaires in Pristina, Anu Prattipati, called on Kosovo to enter a long-term energy partnership with the United States through liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects.
First, she said the partnership would strengthen Kosovo’s energy security and support long-term economic stability. She added that the U.S. and Kosovo could grow their economies together.
In addition, Prattipati highlighted that Kosovo remains outside regional energy projects led by the United States in the Western Balkans. She said this limits the country’s access to diversified energy sources.
Moreover, she noted rising energy demand in Kosovo. She cited customs data showing that Kosovo spent €735 million on electricity imports over the past four years.
According to her, costs are increasing. Electricity imports rose from €142 million in 2024 to €259 million in 2025.
Furthermore, Prattipati warned that Kosovo will become increasingly dependent on neighboring countries if energy reforms are delayed.
She also quoted U.S. energy official Joshua Volz, who said Kosovo’s energy system needs urgent modernization and offers opportunities for U.S. industry cooperation.
In addition, she argued that Kosovo should join planned U.S.-backed gas projects across the region. She said these projects could secure stable American energy supplies for the country.
Meanwhile, she pointed to regional developments. Albania, Croatia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina are already involved in major energy projects, including pipeline initiatives.
At the same time, she stressed urgency. She said infrastructure development takes time and Kosovo must act quickly.
Finally, Prattipati warned that delays could leave Kosovo without access to U.S. LNG supplies as regional agreements expand. She urged immediate decisions to secure long-term benefits for citizens.
Experts and energy officials in Kosovo also supported diversification. They said energy security is national security and stressed the importance of joining regional supply networks.
