New Monograph Explores the Legacy of Don Gjon Buzuku

The Permanent Commission on Linguistics and Literature and the Institute of Linguistics and Literature at the Academy of Sciences presented a new book by Bardhyl Demiraj titled Don Gjon Buzuku and His Meshari.

The event highlighted the importance of the Meshari, the earliest known monument of the Albanian language. At the same time, it showcased Demiraj’s in-depth study of Don Gjon Buzuku and his historic work.

In her opening remarks, Anila Omari said that the new monograph enriches Albanian studies, especially research on Buzuku and the Meshari.

Furthermore, she discussed Buzuku’s theological and intellectual background. She also referred to the source texts that may have inspired the Meshari. According to Omari, the theory that Buzuku served as a parish priest at the Church of Saint Job in the Venice region helps scholars better understand the sources and models behind his work.

In addition, the book suggests that Buzuku was influenced by the spirit of Christian humanism of his time. Therefore, Demiraj places him among prominent Albanian humanist intellectuals of the 15th and 16th centuries, including Marin Barleti, Marin Beçikemi, Gjon Gazulli, and Dhimitër Frangu.

Finally, Omari stressed that the monograph marks a new stage in Buzuku studies. Moreover, she said the work opens the door to further research based on a clear and proven philological approach.
