Wind Energy in Albania Shows Strong Potential to Reduce Energy Imports

The National Agency for Scientific Research and Innovation (AKKSHI) highlighted Albania’s strong potential for wind energy development on World Wind Energy Day.

First, the agency presented results from a research project that evaluates wind energy resources in Albania. The study shows that wind power could reduce electricity imports and lower environmental pollution.

The project, titled “Study of Wind Energy Potential in Areas of Interest in Albania,” received funding from the Ministry of Education under the National Research and Development Program. It analyzed 11 potential wind zones across five geographic regions.

In addition, researchers provided the first systematic technical and economic assessment of wind resources in the country. This created an important data base for future energy planning and investment.

The study selected the Shashica area in Kaninë, Vlorë, for a detailed pilot analysis. Researchers collected three years of on-site measurements using an anemometric tower. They also tested 64 different scenario combinations.

As a result, the study confirmed that onshore wind energy projects in Albania are technically feasible and economically viable.

Experts said wind energy can strengthen Albania’s energy security. It can also help the country meet environmental commitments and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Finally, the findings show that Albania can diversify its energy sources. This would reduce dependence on imports and support the country’s green transition and sustainable development goals.
