Rama: Albania Enters New Tourism Phase Focused on Higher-Spending Visitors

Prime Minister Edi Rama says Albania has completed an important phase of tourism transformation and must now move toward a new stage of development focused on higher revenues and higher-spending visitors.

Speaking at the inauguration of the new Tirana–Toronto route at Tirana International Airport, Rama stressed that Albania should now prioritize high-value tourism and create greater benefits for the economy and local communities.

He said the country has reached a point where it must focus not only on increasing visitor numbers but also on increasing tourism income.

According to Rama, data and international comparisons show that a continuous rise in mass tourism does not automatically generate proportional growth in revenues.

He explained that while visitor numbers may grow rapidly, tourism income often increases at a slower pace. At the same time, governments face rising costs for infrastructure, public services, waste management, water supply, sewage systems, and environmental protection.

Rama argued that Albania should attract more high-end tourism projects and upscale resorts because they generate greater economic value for businesses, local communities, and public finances.

He emphasized that the country will continue to welcome growing numbers of visitors. However, Albania must now adopt a strategy that increases spending per visitor and delivers higher returns to families, businesses, and the state budget.

According to the prime minister, this approach will help ensure sustainable tourism growth while reducing pressure on infrastructure and the environment.
