TIRANA, June 25 – The Agency for Media and Information said misleading use of social media footage has again created confusion in foreign coverage of investment projects in Albania, including reports by CNN and Reuters. In a statement published on Thursday, the agency reviewed several cases of what it described as inaccurate reporting caused by unverified video material.
One case involved footage from Kakome Bay, which CNN aired and wrongly linked to alleged protests by local residents against planned tourism projects on Sazan Island or in Zvërnec. However, the agency said the footage had no connection with either project. According to its verification and explanatory material, the video showed a different local incident in Kakome, where residents moved to remove an old gate.
The agency warned that inaccurate reporting can create a distorted image of Albania and affect both public perception and the wider climate for investment and tourism. In addition, it said taking such images out of context and linking them to strategic tourism projects harms efforts to attract foreign capital.
The agency also rejected claims that the footage showed resistance to investment plans linked to Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump. Instead, it said the images came from a local action in Kakome and had no link to Sazan Island or to the planned development there.
As a result, the agency said this type of disinformation can directly affect the tourism season by spreading false narratives about Albania’s stability and hospitality.
