TIRANA, June 25 – The Albanian Academy of Sciences marked the birth anniversary of academic, writer, literary critic and Albanologist Rexhep Qosja on Wednesday, describing him as one of the most important figures in Albanian scientific and cultural thought.
Born on 25 June 1936 in Vuthaj, Montenegro, he came from a family known for its educational and patriotic tradition. He studied Albanian Language and Literature in Prishtina and graduated in 1964. Later, he specialised at the University of Belgrade.
He built his academic career at the Albanological Institute of Prishtina. Over time, he worked there as researcher, professor and director, becoming a central figure in Albanological studies.
In 1971, he defended his doctorate on Asdreni’s life and work, a study widely regarded as a key contribution to Albanian literary criticism.
Throughout his career, he authored more than 30 works. Among his best-known titles are “History of Albanian Literature”, “The Forbidden People” and “Death Comes from Such Eyes”. His work influenced literary criticism, fiction, drama and publicist writing.
Beyond academia, he shaped intellectual debate across the 20th and 21st centuries. In addition, he consistently defended Albanian cultural and national identity.
He received numerous national and international awards, including the title “Honor of the Nation”.
Rexhep Qosja died on 23 April 2026 at the age of 90. In its commemorative message, the Academy described him as “a brilliant mind, a powerful voice and an irreplaceable figure of Albanology and national culture”.
